A message from all at Alzheimer's Disease International
12 November 2015 - It is with great sadness that we inform you that dementia advocate Peter Ashley passed away on Tuesday 10 November 2015.
Peter was diagnosed with dementia with Lewy bodies in 2000, and worked closely with the Alzheimer’s Society in the UK both as a trustee and in developing a Living with Dementia group. Peter was also involved in the formation of the Lewy Body Society (now affiliated to Parkinson’s UK) and was an associate of Innovations in Dementia CIC.
In 2004, Peter joined the Guideline Development Working Group commissioned to produce the NICE/SCIE Dementia Guidelines CG42, published in 2007, which subsequently became the definitive work on supporting people with dementia and their caregivers in health and social care. Peter was also a member of the drafting team for the UK’s Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the first national dementia strategy in 2009.
Peter was a great champion for the rights of people living with dementia, and gave around 200 presentations at numerous conferences around the world, including ADI’s Conferences. As part of his campaigning, Peter also engaged the media, most recently in a feature length article about financial planning for people living with dementia, which was published in the Guardian earlier this year.
Peter was a close friend of ADI and a tireless campaigner, writer and advocate for people living with dementia, coining the phrase “I’m not dying with dementia, I’m living with dementia”. Peter will be greatly missed by all those whose lives were touched by his warmth and determination. We extend our deepest sympathy to Peter’s wife and family.
